If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, should you be concerned with generational curses? No. Absolutely not! Then why is this false doctrine being promoted by independent ministers? Let’s work with the Spirit of God to discern how the enemy is leading faith astray. That’s what true spiritual warfare is really all about – discerning when the enemy is trying to loop your faith to the works of the flesh and trying to justify his lies with fables.
I’ll explain what a fable is and how the early apostles warned against this Jezebel practice. But first, let’s look at the word “curse”. The claim is that a curse has been passed down from generation to generation and this has been passed down to you and is hindering your growth and faith.
Listen to the message I preached March 20, 2016:
Are Generational Curses Hindering Your Faith?
The word “curse” actually describes a minister’s frustration with his own faith. On the one hand, he will confess to be blessed, but on the other hand, he is in a constant frame of mind, looking for the reason why his blessings are being blocked, why a specific word that seemed like it was from God didn’t come to pass after he confessed, bound the devil, and loosed angels, “Why can’t I pry this blessing from God’s hands!” He are forever asking, “Why isn’t God moving, why can’t I get into a larger financial stream? Why isn’t my ministry growing?”
So the teaching goes on to justify why his doctrine is not working, stating that it’s not God that is keeping this from him, but the devil. His vision isn’t coming into reality because there is still one more thing he has to do. The list of things you have to do gets longer and longer as ministers get more creative with the scriptures, looking for ways in which the devil might be trying to steal their blessings. One of those eggs to crack is figuring out how to break a generational curse, which really does not exist if you are in covenant with God, using the tools of Christ.
Is God Late With Your Blessing?
Isn’t that the way it always is with the false gospel? Your blessing is just out of reach. After being prophesied to, after praying and fasting and binding and loosing, you’re still left out in the cold. You start to feel down and out, looked over and forgotten, and now resentful, suspicious, and stressed out. Now you’re asking, “Who’s making me feel this way?”
Rather than enter into covenant so God can heal their soul daily through the work of regeneration to form the virtues of Christ in the inner man, they subject themselves and the Body of Christ to “deliverance ministry” and incantations and mental flagellations. This is not the lifestyle of faith and walk God meant for you and this is not true spiritual warfare, for you’re only beating the air, fighting with yourself. This is a symptom of an impoverished soul.
What is a Fable?
Now let’s talk about why fables go hand-in-hand with doctrinal fads. What is the one thing that might sell you on the idea that a generational curse might be standing in the way of your prize? What is the one thing that might cause you to buy into this spiritual ponzi scheme?
As with all successful cons, the most powerful selling point is the success stories, how this or that happened to someone else, and this can happen to you too. The Spirit of the Lord, speaking through Apostle Paul, warned believers not to give heed to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3-4
3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”
4 “And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
Have you noticed that someone inevitably comes forward with a testimony about how God’s provision came out of nowhere, how in the nick of time finances came through after an incantation session where he’s gone through his list of confessions to break through. And this person proclaims, “My eyes are open! I can see! This is how God’s blessings come to us.” – and a fable is born.
Did you know, this was the exact testimony of Adam after having followed Satan’s counsel – after having eaten of the fruit of the tree that God forbade him to touch—Adam’s eyes were opened, but he could no longer discern truth from error. In other words, he accepted the present testimony (that which Satan gave him) as truth.
The consequence of that is obvious. Adam’s spiritual eyes were now altered. He only accepted truth(s) that worked with his present philosophy and he was at the wheel of his philosophy, steering it in the direction he thought would resolve his present issues of loss, confusion, regret, and need until God would give him a covenant to see Him again and to know Him.
In that we were all born into the same fallen state, Satan has the home court advantage. He has been manipulating with the perspective of man for a long time, directing the mind to engage God to resolve his issues, knowing that God’s plan is different. Satan has always chided with God saying, “If you will just give them what they crave, give them what they want, they’ll serve you.”
So there’s a lot of shouting going on every time someone receives a positive outcome. Everyone gathers around that person who just experienced “the blessing”, asking, “What did you do? How did this come about?” Thinking, “I want to get in on this! At last, something that actually works!”
One believer will say that he fasted and another will say that he bound the devil and another will say that he drank of the communion cup and another will say that he loosed angels and another will say that he repeated the steps of Joshua and walked up and down the problem. But when you repeat these same words or actions, it doesn’t work for you and you’re left wondering what you did wrong. Why is it that someone else can do this right, but you can’t?
One of the things you’re told to do is examine yourself. Are there unconfessed sins, do you have the right attitude, have you given until it hurts, have you emptied yourself of every conceivable false agenda?
Every spiritual bump in the road causes you to examine yourself, but doesn’t produce faith. False knowledge causes you to pause and reevaluate because things did not pan out for you, but you are not examining yourself in regards to the faith, but rather questioning why you did not receive a blessing. At that time someone else comes upon with another spiritual gimmick. Maybe there is a generational curse you are unaware of. And so hope is sparked anew. Maybe if you get this monkey off your back then you can have what you believe God promised you. Gold to the sinner, is his truth.
As many claim this confusion to be the will of God and shout the praises of the minister they followed in this way of error (they feel the adrenalin of adventure again and mistake this for faith), the church remained shrouded in darkness and believers continued to suffer.
The church in that condition, subject to the whims of independent ministers, is as Samson. His two eyes being put out represents the two thousand years the church would lose sight of Christ, blindly serving the flesh, grinding at the mill. God’s word of warning: “Don’t put the mill stone before the corner stone.”
Now that the restored church has emerged, believers are no longer serving the idols of man’s pride. Many things have changed. As believers accepted the restored apostolic stewardship, they were given the stones of Christ’s knowledge to build faith in His image and likeness. This redirected faith away from feeding the instincts of the natural man. God could now direct their faith to the nine spiritual tools of Christ’s covenant to labor with the Spirit to receive their daily dose of grace to sow back into the Body of Christ.
In that each “dose” of grace has a tremendous and tangible impact upon the soul, it wasn’t long before the saints learned how to develop an appetite for grace, how to increase with God’s grace, and live by the power and strength of God’s grace in the anointing of the Holy Spirit. One could hear the silence grow as one by one, believers abandoned the millstone philosophies and stopped following the footsteps of their aspiration.
Serving God in covenant has meant a whole new lifestyle of faith that is joined to the sanctified tokens of Christ to build His house. The cleansing of the soul and victory over self, Satan, and the world is part of our daily priesthood and communion of charity as the Spirit of God pulls the thread of grace through each vessel.
Excerpt From the Message: The Idols that Serves the Aspiration
The problem is not with God withholding a blessing or with Satan standing in the way of your blessing. The problem is with this idol you’ve made to serve your aspiration. Because the idol of aspiration (getting God’s best for me) does not have life in itself, it needs these quips (how to break generational curses) to give it lips to speak to your hope again. But it is a weariness to your soul and heavy burden to bear.
A philosophy (generational curse) was authorized to justify an aspiration. So the philosophy (a generational curse is standing in the way of my blessing) is used to create an authority, which then became the law by which they live by to justify or condemn. [Teaching from Isaiah 46 & 2 Corinthians 13]
Always remember: There is no curse in Christ. No curse follows you into covenant.
Additional Teaching Points From the Message:
Word From the Message: “My righteousness is present to those who call upon me. The things which I have proposed, I will fulfill. This is my pleasure. This meets my expectation because my expectation is in this plan. The plan which I devised in myself, which my sons and my daughters will bear and bring forth fruit and carry forth my tradition. They will carry the tradition of my house.”
