You know what a spiritual tic disorder is, don’t you? We have all seen ministers with this affliction, whereas they give themselves over to all kinds of unseemly behavior from goose-bumps shivers to patting their tummy, or spastic fits, laughter, yelling at the devil, etc.

Where do these seemingly uncontrollable impulses come from and why do ministers give themselves over to them?

A deeper question is, Why do they claim these impulses to be the Holy Spirit acting through them? Many ministers have found themselves victims of those who teach that God wants us to give ourselves over to the impulses that are born of the natural man.

Quote from page 27 of  “The Apostolic Calling & Anointing”

“The problem is that we cannot serve God with these powers that come from the natural man. These 5 parts of our natural creation actually produce a prejudiced environment for the will and leave the will bruised and weak. Nevertheless, our natural inclination is to use these powers of our own soul to serve God. Ministers thought that if they could give these powers a make-over they could give them a godly appearance, so they attached scripture to the nature of man to try to transform it.

“The natural man wants to be rewarded for his endeavors so the natural inclination is to use the record of his own soul as building material for faith. But the endeavors of the things of the world stays with the world and will perish with the world. We need new powers to serve God. New powers need to be presented to the will.

2 Corinthians 5:17,
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

“All things are made new in Christ. From Christ we are given new knowledge, new spiritual tools, a new priesthood, a new altar, a new stewardship, and the new law of grace and truth (Jn 1:17).” [End Quote]

A Trail of Misconceptions

There is a trail of misconceptions that begins with the idea that the Holy Spirit moves through the inclinations and impulses of our natural creation. Many well-meaning ministers have fallen into this trap. Benny Hinn copied the style and mannerisms of Kathryn Kuhlman. Her spiritual tic was swooning and swaying and speaking in ghostly, soft, hushed tones.

When I was at a Kuhlman meeting in the early 70’s the Lord opened my eyes and allowed me to see the angel that was performing the miracles. I watched the angel move from one side of the congregation to another and observed how Kuhlman pointed in the direction of the angel.

Ministers enrolled into various schools of prophecy to learn how to free themselves to the Holy Spirit, thinking that this is what Kuhlman had done. They saw in her swaying and hushed, theatrical tones one who had “given herself over to the Spirit” as if in a holy trance. They were taught that God wanted to free them from inhibitions that might keep them back from giving themselves over to these impressions, and they were advised to become non-judgmental and uninhibited.

This is why ministers advocate for the child-like mind. It is thought that children do not censor their actions as adults do and therefore ministers came to admire that quality in children, desiring to achieve it. For them, to become as a child meant to refrain from censoring their actions, to just give themselves over to the impressions they thought were coming from God. This battle cry is often sounded: “Don’t let the judgments of others inhibit you!”

The childish mind was also embraced because of the promise of innocence it held. A minister thought that he could measure his motives upon this scale, saying, “I had all good intent to allow the Holy Spirit to use me. I make no claims other than to be a vessel for God’s glory.”

We can see how true discernment is being set aside. In reality truth is the foundation of one’s thinking. It is the record of Christ that allows us to judge according to Christ Jesus. In the absence of truth a set of principles are selected to act as safe guards against impropriety, which frees up the carnal mind to replace the true supernatural gifts of God with spiritual tics.

We can add to the pot of spiritual tics what has been called as “Holy Ghost dancing” (uncontrollable urge to dance or jerk one’s body around) and “Holy Ghost painting” (uncontrollable paint strokes and color selection). More examples of spiritual tics are chills, the sweating brow, excess perspiration, spinning, the pew dance, leaping, and arm threshing, exhaustive shouting, hitting, and perpetual weeping, and the travailing howling. These things are initiated out of one’s own passion. It is not the Holy Spirit.

Many build a spiritual tic into a ministry, like the “Daughters of Shiloh”, Prophetic Art, Prophetic Cooking, or dietary revelations, or making prophetic declarations.

Many of those behind the microphone find these things appealing simply because they like the adrenaline rush and like the response they receive from those of like nature. The pew sitters shout amen and clap their hands at the forced breathing and deep sighs some would call the anointing (which it is not).

Each manifestations, because it is thought to be a divine power of force (rather than their own passions), is used to confirm that the ideas or thoughts they had must truly be “of the Lord” and that any question of it source should be considered doubt. This false authority is like an iron-on patch, it has eye appeal but is not based on reality.

The stewardship of this false authority and leadership brings attention to their tics as to establish a confirmation of God authorizing their words to be authentically divine or “thus saith the Lord.”

Now believers can free themselves from those that give themselves over to spiritual tics. When you are in covenant with God His supernatural gifts manifest daily –without spiritual tics.

Charity Does Not Act Unseemly

Charity does not act unseemly. A believer adding their passions to the anointing has no anointing. This is a fair show of the flesh to make merchandise of you.

1 Corinthians13:5
“Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;”

Ephesians 4:19
“Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

Galatians 6:12
“As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.”

Those under this spell feel that the more out-of-control they are the more God is in control. This is fallacious doctrine. This is doctrines of devils!

There is no bonding of faith provided in these tics. They are self assuming in nature. The wisdom of God doesn’t lead the soul into aimless manifestations (as the laughter movement claims to be the act of God). It leaves the soul exhausted and empty of virtue.

Tics are ambiguous to interpret. That itself is a sign of the source that inspires the victim to follow the impulses they feel. Those given to tics also freely interpret for others what they feel. They also seek a witness from others to validate it. This is a sly form of flattery they put into a biblical form of language. It sounds like God because of the voice of scriptures, but God does not use ambiguous sign language to teach us knowledge. God uses the stewardship of His government for the sound foundation of truth. Spiritual tics lead believers to display faith in carnal things and will sow dissension towards the government of God.

1 John 3:18,
“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

By this they use their own soul as a record for faith. They substitute Christ’s record with their own. This is called blasphemy. They claim to love the Lord in word, yet their love for God is not in deed nor in truth.

Deed refers to covenant practices which the truth frames for our faith. This is the true priesthood of the believer. The true God and eternal life

Tic Believers Disavow The Idol

Tic believers are likened to a priesthood absent the stewardship, as we see in the actions of Aaron in the absence of Moses.

Exodus 32:24,
“And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.”

Yes, all kinds of idols jump out of the fire of man’s aspiration—the false anointing. God uses Aaron’s actions to teach us about spiritual tics. The habit of the minister, whose priesthood is separated from the stewardship, is to disavow any knowledge of his actions to create the idol; to somehow attach a divine act to it, as if it was out of his control. The calf just jumped out of the fire. Now what kind of sacrifice is that? It is manmade!

What did God think of this substitute?

Exodus 32:7-9
7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

Stiffnecked: they refuse the yoke I have given them for faith. They replaced the tokens of God’s sanctification for faith with their own ideas and selected leadership.

The modern church has fallen into the same mindset. All these idols have emerged from the fire (false anointings). God’s call is to come into covenant with Him. Throw away those carnal traditions and you throw away the shadows of confusion.
